Albert Seidel, slipped his cable on May 3, and is now sailing the sea of eternity.
The Savannah Table is greatly saddened by Albert’s passing, but we all are grateful for our time with him, and his dedication to the Brotherhood. Albert has stood out as the essence of what the Fraternity is all about. His ship, his home, and his heart were always open and welcoming to his Brotherhood family. His stories, and stories about him, will be told into the future. Today we see him at the helm of his beloved his Barkentine, a twinkle in his eye, and his broad smile in place, heading to the four points of the compass with a fair wind constantly at his back. Alise does not plan a memorial or celebration for Albert at this time. Family has recently visited and is home in their various countries. However, Alise wants all of Albert’s friends to know that at a future date there will be a proper Pirate Celebration of Albert’s life and exploits.
It appears that some Brothers were not aware of the April 1st deadline for the National Zaf in New York this August. Therefore we are extending the deadline to April 15th for registration. We look forward to seeing our Brothers for our Big Apple Party!

In line with the decision made by SECOIN, and with immediate effect, Brise-Galets will hand over to brother Americo a.k.a. Jorge Sapiains the management of the Boclist, which today contains 3700 contacts, having started in 1992 with 18 contacts. He wishes to thank all of the brothers who helped him along the way with what turned out to be a very long and tedious process. He wishes brother Americo to make good progress toward what would be the ultimate goal of a worldwide Brotherhood roster. Orza to all of you !!!

Gary is a pretty tough old sailor,, but anyone who was there knows that it was the quick thinking and the truly professional application of CPR by A..JJ.. Eller and Scott Rogers that saved his life.. All of their training and experience was there for Gary when it was needed.. Scott is a retired fire fighter with EMT experience and is trained in CPR,, using it numerous times during his career..

A..JJ.. Eller is an operating room registered nurse who is also CPR trained,, although in her work she has not had to use CPR as much as Scott.. Sometimes CPR is the only option,, but it is not ideal.. In Scott’s experience,, when CPR is necessary the survival rate is fairly low,, sadly only about 5%% make it..
When Gary collapsed,, Scott and A..JJ.. sprang into action without a moment’s hesitation.. Initially Gary was breathing and had a pulse.. After a few minutes,, however,, Garry lost his pulse and Scott and E..JJ..,, working as an effective and highly skilled team,, administered CPR.. A..JJ.. was first to perform CPR, and after she tired,, Scott took over until the ambulance arrived.. Both made sure that Gary’s airway was clear to avoid choking,, with Craig Wright lending a hand.. Even though the hospital was close – by,, this event took place during Norfolk’s “HHarbor Fest””,, and many streets were closed or congested.. It took about 15 minutes for the ambulance to arrive,, while Scott and A..JJ.. attended to Gary.. The EMT’s took over CPR,, administered two shocks by AED (Automated External Defibrillator)),, and wheeled Gary to the ambulance,, where he was stabilized and then taken to the hospital..
When asked about how he felt prior to collapsing,, Gary said he had no warning at all – no shortness of breath or feeling dizzy.. He had never been told that his medical history would indicate a cardiac event could happen.. Thankfully,, subsequent testing found no arterial blockage or permanent damage,, but instead pointed to Atrial Fibrillation (AAFIB)) as the cause.. Gary has no memory of his collapse or the next four days in the hospital..
Gary’s son Jimmy came from Hawaii to be with him during his lengthy Norfolk hospital stay.. There were some speed bumps along the way,, but the “SSwedish Navigator”” is now back at his home in Cocoa Beach,, Florida,, with close friends nearby and receiving great care.. Gary is as feisty as ever and just celebrated his 80 th birthday on August 21 st . He now has a pacemaker which monitors his heart’s rhythm,, and if AFIB is detected,, it administers a mild pulse to shock his heart back into normal rhythm..
One take – away from this event is that if an AED were readily available,, it could have been used effectively to stabilize Gary rather than administering CPR.. National Captain Scott Ripley has taken this to heart and provisioned both his home and boat with AEDs.. Other Brothers should seriously consider purchasing an AED as a cheap insurance policy..
We are all grateful to A..JJ.. and Scott,, the ambulance paramedics,, and the doctors and nurses of Norfolk’s first class cardiac hospital,, for Gary’s recovery.. Lastly,, but most importantly,, the members of the Chesapeake Table,, too many to name,, visited,, encouraged,, and looked after Gary for the entire time he was in the hospital and rehabilitation center.. For those of us who could only call and send cards,, it was good to know that Brothers and their wives were there for him.. Gary and the Savannah Table can’t thank you enough for his incredible “eearly”” birthday present!!

John(Jay) Howard was born in Mount Vernon, New York on August 2, 1941. Jay was a resident of City Island, New York for the past 59 years.
Jay is survived by his wife, Norma, and his brothers, Ed, Robert, and George of City Island, and their children: Edward, Lucille, Michelle, Robert, Cassidy and Russell.Jay is also survived by his two sons with his first wife, Maureen Kortleven; John, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and grandson Kingston, and Peter, daughter-in-law Carrie, and grandchildren Bryce and Laurel.
Jay was a major force in City Island Community Projects, Outreach, and Service and was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was a true “Man of the People”, and inspired everyone with his kindness, selflessness, humor, and genuine interest in the human spirit; especially the young, the vulnerable, the needy, and the ordinary. Jay made everyone he knew feel like the most important person in the world.
Jay lit up a room with his infectious personality and laughter. He was never one to deny anyone a moment of his time, or safe harbor for the needy. He always appeared to take great pleasure in helping others.
Jay Howard achieved public recognition for his service with teens through his “Living Rocks” Project, and was an inspiration to young and old alike.

A memorial service for Jay will be held Saturday, November 4, 11 a.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church, corner of City Island Avenue and Bay Street. (113 Bay, 10464). It will be followed by a reception in the church hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made in Jay’s memory. The NY Brotherhood will do so when there is more information about the creation of a fund honoring Jay’s enormous contributions to the youth of City Island.

Vincent Werbrouck visits NY
The recent North East blizzard denied this verses, but the NY Table was still able to welcome our Belgian brother Vincent Webrouck aka”Cannonier” and his captive Wivine, from the table of Brussels. After a double transatlantic crossing, he sails out of Toulon, France.

Today I experienced what is the true meaning and exceptional about The Brotherhood of the Coast in general and the Chesapeake Bay in particular. Due to an ongoing serious illness I am currently unable to clean and attend to maintenance requirements on Pounce.
This morning in high winds, heavy snow and rain, 9 brothers: Capt. Upwind,(Peter Dennant), Capt. Country Boy (Michael Monteith), Viajero (John Martin),El Calbucano (Tom Smith), Floater (Eric Matherne). Tortuga (Peter Briggs), Bui (John Williams), Tinker (David Holmes), and El Maestro (Mark Eller) came aboard Pounce at Hampton Yacht Club and began work. They changed the oil in both engines and the generator, made list of additional items to be taken care of, brought necessary supplies to perform these tasks and removed trash and cleaned up after themselves.
Also, Brothers unable to attend, have provided much needed moral support as well as Brothers from other Tables.
I cannot thank everyone enough and I am truly blessed to be a member of the Brotherhood of the Coast.

Mike left us unexpectedly this week after years of learning to live with serious medical conditions. In addition to his other challenges, but unknown to Mike, he also had an advanced heart problem. Through it all, Mike maintained his sense of humor and positive outlook. He worked on his many projects, and to Karen’s frustration, frequently acquired new ones. He supported his local sailing club, went schooner racing every summer in Nova Scotia until he couldn’t, and set about restoring a vintage VW Beetle for Karen. The Savannah Table depended on Brother “Broomlip” to manage our funds as Purser, and for a time he also took on the job of Scribe. In recent years he applied his considerable expertise to boiling lobsters, making our fall Lobster Dinner the success it was. Mike and Karen constantly opened their home to the Table. The Savannah Table is blessed with a lot of heart, one of the biggest lived at 32 Brightwater Drive in Thunderbolt, Georgia. He will be greatly missed.

Bob and Marge had several years of courageous battles with illness. Following are few thoughts prepared by Dan and Bonnie Sagan about Bob’s passing…..
We are saddened by the passing of brother Goofy, Bob Hadley and will miss him dearly. Before his health battles became a nearly full time effort, Captain Bob and his captive (Admiral) Marge,were active ambassadors of brotherhood in every sense of the word. They traveled to national and international Zafs on their own boat bottom, by air, auto and prairie schooner (R. V.) and made and kept friends from around the U.S. and around the world. Bob truly embraced International brotherhood. If all of his many friends could each give Bob one day, he would have lived to a hundred. He both gave and received a great deal of warmth.
We are all relieved Matthew did not cause too much damage to our coast. Many trees fell and major utilities are still not re-established.
